The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested three people in connection with the killing of Iddrisu Sumaila and an attack on Sambin Halidu, the elected chief of Tindorunga in the Tempane District.

In a statement, the police said officers from the regional command travelled to Garu on May 26, 2026, to support the district police in arresting suspects linked to the violent incident.

The suspects have been identified as Majeed Bawumya, 34, Milla Justice, 27, and Majeed Awudu, 20.

Police said a search conducted at the residence of Majeed Bawumya, also known as Atan Majeed, led to the discovery of a BRUNI MOD 92 Cal. 8mmK pistol, several sharp weapons, GH¢600 in cash, and three mobile phones believed to be connected to the attack.

According to preliminary investigations, the trouble started after kingmakers from Worinyanga presented three people, including Sambin Halidu, to the Bawku overlord, Naba Zugraan Asigri Abugrago Azorka II, for consideration and possible enskinment as chief of Tindorunga.

Police said some members of an opposing group were unhappy with the selection of Sambin Halidu and allegedly threatened to stop the enskinment ceremony, which was scheduled to take place on May 26, 2026.

Investigators believe that on May 25, suspect Majeed Bawumya and other accomplices, including one Alhassan Sabrina, who is currently on the run, held a meeting at Bawumya’s residence to plan the attack.

Police further explained that at about 3:00 a.m. on the day of the ceremony, the suspects allegedly stormed the home of Sambin Halidu and his family while preparations were ongoing.

The attackers reportedly fired gunshots indiscriminately and set a Mitsubishi 4×4 vehicle with registration number GE 1115-13 on fire.

Several people suffered injuries during the attack. Iddrisu Sumaila, who sustained gunshot wounds, was rushed to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.

The police say investigations are still ongoing and have appealed to residents to remain calm and assist with information that could help in the case.
