The 2025/26 English Premier League (EPL) season delivered a dramatic conclusion at both ends of the table, with West Ham United, Burnley, and Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) confirmed as the three relegated sides, while Coventry City, Ipswich Town, and Hull City secured promotion from the Championship.
West Ham United suffered one of the most painful relegations in their recent history. Despite finishing the season with 39 points, they dropped into the Championship on the final day after results elsewhere went against them, Spurs beating Everton.
It marks their third relegation in Premier League history, having also gone down in 2003 and 2011. The club had spent 14 consecutive seasons in the top flight before this setback, a period that included European success in the Europa Conference League in 2023.
Burnley also cemented their relegation after a 1-1 draw with Wolves. The Clarets finished the campaign with just 22 points and were relegated for the third time in the Premier League in the last six years, having previously gone down in 2022 and 2024.
Wolverhampton Wanderers completed the trio of relegated sides, finishing bottom of the table. Their 2025/26 drop marks their second Premier League relegation since 2010, following previous demotions in 2012.
In contrast, Coventry City, Ipswich Town, and Hull City earned promotion back to the top flight. Coventry secured automatic promotion, returning to the Premier League for the first time since 2001, ending a 25-year absence.
Ipswich Town continued their strong resurgence, achieving back-to-back promotions to return to the Premier League, where they last competed in 2002.
Hull City sealed their return via the Championship play-offs, marking their sixth spell in the Premier League after previous appearances in 2008–10, 2013–15, and 2016/17.
As the new season approaches, the promoted clubs will aim to establish themselves quickly, while the relegated sides prepare for the financial and sporting challenge of life in the Championship.
