The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has given the government a two-week deadline to take action over the alleged assault of some teachers by military officers in the Western Region.
The incident reportedly involved officers from the 2nd Infantry Battalion at Apremdo in Takoradi.
The situation has caused anger among teachers, especially in the Wassa West District, where some teachers said they were attacked and humiliated.
During an interview on Thursday, May 7, 2026, GNAT General Secretary Thomas Tanko Musah said attacks on teachers are becoming too common and must stop.
He explained that teachers are now facing abuse from different groups in society, including students, parents, and even security officers.
“For us as GNAT, our motto always stands, ‘We live to teach.’ However, it looks like some stakeholders are becoming a stumbling block on our way,” he said.
“These students, some of them have been beating teachers. Some parents also go to schools and beat teachers. And now the military people too have joined the beating,” he said.
“And we are telling ourselves that if the state cannot protect us, then we are not safe.”
Mr. Musah said GNAT has asked the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to respond within two weeks.
The union wants the affected teachers to receive medical care, compensation, and justice by ensuring those responsible are punished.
He added that the teachers involved have already reported the matter to the police and are helping with investigations.
Mr. Musah also warned that GNAT could take industrial action if authorities fail to address the issue before the deadline.
“If the powers that be fail to act, nobody should underestimate our actions,” he said.
