Kuami Eugene has revealed that he has grown weary of consistently winning the Highlife Artiste of the Year award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), stating that he does not wish for his career to be solely associated with one genre.
Speaking in an interview, the acclaimed artiste mentioned that while he is predominantly recognised for highlife music, he produces music across various genres.
During the discussion, Kuami Eugene shared that he received two nominations at this year’s TGMA but confessed he was uncertain about the categories in which he was nominated until the host brought them up.
When questioned if he was fatigued by winning the highlife artiste category, Kuami Eugene responded: “I was tired two years ago because I wanted somebody to win something. Yeah, because I didn’t want to be known for just Highlife”.
He emphasised that his primary goal is to be acknowledged for creating quality music rather than being confined to a single genre label.
“I want to be known for producing good music,” he added in an interview on Joy Prime.
The dialogue also addressed the ongoing discussion regarding Highlife and Afrobeats. Clarifying his musical style, Kuami Eugene expressed that he creates various types of music, including afrobeats, afropop, drill, and dancehall.
“I make Highlife, Afrobeat, Afropop, Drill, and Dancehall music. It’s me. I make all kinds of music, but the one I’m known for, because I’ve made a couple of them, is Highlife. But I make other genres as well.”
