4 arrested in Kintampo North for illegal mining on Black Volta
In a determined move to protect one of Ghana’s vital water bodies, authorities in Kintampo North have arrested four individuals for illegal mining activities on the Black Volta River.
The arrests were made on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, during a targeted operation led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), supported by a team of police and military officers.
The operation followed intelligence reports about ongoing galamsey operations within the municipality.
The Black Volta has faced increasing pollution in recent months, raising concerns about the impact on both the environment and local livelihoods.
Speaking after the arrests, the MCE said the municipality had been monitoring the activities of the illegal miners.
“It has been realized by my municipality that there is a team of galamseyers who are here. We have come to realize that they are polluting the Black Volta,” he said.
The joint task force uncovered and seized heavy machinery used in the illegal mining operations. More equipment was located along the riverbank, and the MCE stated that all such tools will be destroyed to prevent further use.
He also made it clear that the municipality is not backing down. “We are making sure that the galamsey business within the Kintampo North municipality will be a lion’s den for these galamseyers. We are leaving no stone unturned.”
The four suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to face legal proceedings soon. Local authorities say the fight against illegal mining will continue with full force.
