Kevin Taylor ordered to pay GH¢2.95m for defaming Ace Ankomah

The Accra High Court has awarded GH¢2.95m in damages to popular legal practitioner Ace Ankomah after he was defamed by US-based political commentator Kevin Taylor.

Kevin Taylor and his productions company ‘Loud Silence Media’ have been releasing weekly video documentaries dubbed ‘With All Due Respect’ on controversial issues in Ghana.

These videos are then circulated on social media platforms.

In one such video on Facebook and Youtube in July 2019, he published defamatory remarks against the plaintiff Ace Ankomah relating to the Menzgold saga.

Theghanareport.com’s sources at the High Court explained that although the defendants were outside the country, the court had jurisdiction to hear the case of defamation.

This is because, the condemned material published by Kevin Taylor and his company Loud Silence, was targeted at a Ghanaian audience and viewership.

The videos were downloaded in Ghana, a country which the plaintiff lived in.

The plaintiff’s counsel Thaddeus Sory said the false and malicious publications by Mr. Baidoo Taylor “has injured his hard-won reputation into hatred, ridicule, obloquy, discredit, contempt, vilification, reproach” which has caused Mr. Anan Ankomah great distress and emotional trauma.”

The judgment delivered on February 24, 2020, ordered the following payments for the reputational injury caused Ace Ankomah.

1. General Damages of GH¢2,000,000;
2. Aggravated Damages of GH¢500,000;
3. Exemplary Damages of GH¢400,000;
4. Perpetual injunction to restrain the publication of further material;
5. Defendants to publish Apology within 14 days;
6. Mandatory injunction compelling Defendants to remove offending material within 14 days; and
7. Costs of ghs50,000

Ace Ankomah had asked for 10million cedis.

The judgment said Kevin Taylor had offended “the court’s sense of decency” and described his conduct as “reprehensible” and “egregious.”

The court also described Taylor’s comments as “cavalier.”

The court also noted that Kevin Taylor did not “have the cojones to respond” despite bluffing on social media, creating the impression he was ready to defend his “bombastic video.”
