Bomb scare as Parliament orders military sweep before sessions

The Right Honorable Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has formally requested security assistance from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), effective Tuesday, October 22, 2024.

GAF has been tasked with conducting canine sweeps using trained dogs and other bomb detection operations to identify explosive devices at the makeshift Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), where parliamentary sessions will be held.

This request comes after high tension following the Speaker’s declaration of four seats vacant on Thursday, October 17, 2024, and a counter Supreme Court order.

These security measures will be implemented on the first sitting day of each week.

This development highlights the importance of maintaining national security and stability, particularly in sensitive areas such as Parliament.

The Ghana Armed Forces has demonstrated its capabilities in providing security assistance, having previously conducted training exercises and operations to combat terrorism and other threats.

Parliament is at a crossroads as the NPP Caucus and the NDC Caucus are both holding on to Majority statuses without any intentions to yield.

Further deliberations are expected to resolve the matter for parliamentary proceedings to commence smoothly.
