A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 months in prison by the Mampong Magistrate court in the Ashanti Region for stealing Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) meters.
He was arrested and arraigned four days after the crime following the swift action by state prosecutor Chief Inspector Richard Obeng Asare.
A statement from the GWCL commended the judicial service and emphasised the importance of compliance with utility regulations to safeguard community resources.
Highlighting the growing concerns about the integrity of water supply systems in the Ashanti Region, the GWCL revealed that another individual, Priscilla Amofa, is currently in custody at the Kumasi Central Police Station for illegally reconnecting water supply.
Her accomplice, Nana Adu, is still at large.
These cases underscore the need for vigilance in safeguarding water supply systems.
Therefore, residents in the Ashanti Region have been encouraged to report suspicious activities related to water theft as part of ongoing efforts to maintain essential services.
