Residents of East Mamprusi in the North East Region are outraged after a brutal gang-rape of a seven-month pregnant woman by six armed men on the deteriorating Gambaga-Dagbriboari road.
The victim and her husband were reportedly ambushed while returning from a check-up in Nalerigu.
Consequently, the pregnant woman is suffering severe physical and emotional trauma.
Narrating the incident, the victim’s grandfather stated that such incidents happen very often in the community.
“The robbers were six in number and well-armed… Many other residents of the community had fallen victim to similar attacks, losing their belongings to the assailants,” he said.
He attributed the increase in violent incidents to the poor state of the road and the government’s failure to address the issue.
“Years of neglect of our roads have caused us a lot of calamity, and sometimes we asked ourselves if we were also part of Ghana,” he added.
The victim, who wished to remain anonymous, appealed for the immediate repair of the roads.
Despite reporting the incident to the authorities, including the Municipal Chief Executive and the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, there has been no action from the police, and no arrests have been made.
Reacting to the situation, the MP for Nalerigu, Issifu Seidu, expressed concern over the security situation in his constituency, noting that the poor condition of the roads contributes to such incidents.
He added that he has plans to address the issue in Parliament.
“As a Member of Parliament, I have a voice on the floor of Parliament… I think what I have to do is to make a statement on the floor of Parliament so that we can get the Interior Minister to come in and respond to some practical steps they have taken to mitigate the situation,” he said.
