The New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has apologised for the comment he made about Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
Following his sincere apology, traditional leaders in Nkroful, the hometown of Dr Nkrumah, have forgiven the NPP running mate for his comments about their revered kinsman.
During his unveiling as running mate to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on July 9, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, compared President Akufo-Addo’s achievements to those of Dr. Nkrumah, suggesting that Akufo-Addo had done more for Ghana’s development.
The remarks, perceived as disrespectful by many, triggered widespread condemnation.
Among those who expressed their disapproval were the traditional leaders of Nkroful, who demanded a personal apology from Dr. Opoku Prempeh.
On August 9, 2024, during a campaign tour of the Western Region, Dr Opoku Prempeh visited Nkroful to meet with the chiefs and apologise.
He acknowledged that his comments had been misunderstood and expressed regret for any offense caused.
The Chief of Nkroful, Nana Kwasi Kutua, accepted the apology, advising Dr. Opoku Prempeh to avoid similar remarks in the future.
The chiefs emphasized the importance of recognizing Dr. Nkrumah’s contributions to the nation and maintaining peace.
Dr Opoku Prempeh’s visit was part of his broader campaign efforts in the Western Region as he introduced himself to voters ahead of the 2024 general elections.
