Some squatters at the Kasoa New Market in the Awutu Senya East Municipality have been left homeless after a fire gutted their kiosks.
The fire started around 7:00 pm on Wednesday, March 27, and raged for an hour.
Despite the efforts of firefighters, they could not salvage any of the victims’ belongings.
Speaking to reporters, some of the squatters said the fire started from the accumulated refuse in the market.
They described the traumatic event of watching their kiosks being engulfed in flames, leaving them in utter despair.
However, there was no casualty as the fire started when most of the occupants were awake.
Meanwhile, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Awutu Senya East, Anita Love Obo Amisah, assured the affected squatters that the assembly would make all efforts to find a lasting solution to the issue of squatting in the area.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire, which destroyed several properties, started around 6:30 am and is believed to have originated from the burning of a car tyre by a resident.
The blaze quickly spread, engulfing the drinking spot before spreading to neighbouring buildings, leaving behind a trail of destruction.
Efforts were made to rescue individuals trapped in the burning structures, with one resident requiring medical attention due to smoke inhalation.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) swiftly responded to the emergency, dispatching three fire engines to the scene to battle the flames.
Despite their efforts, the fire caused significant damage, leaving many residents distraught.
