It’s a historic moment for us – SDA Church on EC’s consideration of election date change
The Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church has welcomed the Electoral Commission’s decision to consider changing the election date from December 7 to a working day in November.
The leadership of the church proposed that the date be moved to a Tuesday in November to allow all Ghanaians, regardless of religious affiliation to participate in the democratic process without compromising their religious duties.
During the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held on Monday, January 22, 2024, the EC tabled the proposal.
It has, however, announced that the proposed change to the election date will not be implemented this year as the idea is yet to be placed before Parliament.
The Deputy EC Chairman in charge of Corporate Services, Dr Eric Asare Bossman, revealed that the new date will be a selected day in November, and not November 7 as widely speculated.
Reacting to this, the SDA Church said it appreciates the EC’s “willingness to accommodate this significant change in the future”.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Solace Yawa Asafo, the Communication Spokesperson for the SDA in Ghana, described the move as “historic”.
“It’s a historic moment for us. This decision signifies a victory for religious freedom and underscores the importance of accommodating diverse religious practices within our democratic framework,” she said.
