The Judicial Service of Ghana and the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) have affirmed their commitment to fighting corruption in all forms across the country.
In a joint statement dated Wednesday, December 27, 2023, the two legal institutions noted that their stance was necessitated by the seriousness of problems and threats posed by corruption and corruption-related activities to Ghana’s development and democracy.
Underscoring the important roles of the Judiciary and the OSP in combating corruption, the two”Affirm a joint commitment to suppress and repress corruption and corruption-related activities in all forms through collaborative enforcement of the law and continuous engagement.
The statement added that they will do so “while upholding the rule of law and the provision of fair hearing to all stakeholders in the criminal justice system.”
Addressing the media on Wednesday, November 29, the Special Prosecutor expressed alarm at the “growing hasty dismissiveness and lack of regard” for corruption cases, which he believes could severely impede the OSP’s ability to fulfill its mandate.
He highlighted four specific cases that exemplified this trend, including the acquittal of Cecilia Dapaah, a former government official, in a corruption case and the refusal of a court to freeze the estate of former NPP General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, despite mounting allegations of corruption about his estate.
