Police interdict COP Mensah and 2 others over leaked IGP tape

The Ghana Police Service has interdicted Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah and two others, implicated in the alleged leaked IGP tape.

COP Mensah, together with Emmanuel Eric Gyebi and George Lysander Asare, both Superintendents, were captured in a conversation ostensibly plotting to remove the current IGP, George Akuffo Dampare, before the 2024 general elections.

In a press release signed by the Director for Public Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the interdiction is to make way for disciplinary proceedings into their conduct in line with police service regulations.

Earlier, a police wireless message instructed COP Mensah to hand over his weapons, uniforms, and other police belongings to Depol Logistics.

He is also expected to hand over the command vehicle to the police transport department.

All three police officers are before Parliament’s ad-hoc committee regarding the leaked audio tape that also captures a former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu.

Mr Naabu confirmed the content of the tape, while COP Mensah denied the content, saying portions have been “edited”.

Superintendent Asare also said Bugri Naabu was merely inventing stories against him.

Below is a statement to that effect.
