The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has outlined key achievements made so far in office, highlighting the securing of a $30 million investment by President John Dramani Mahama for the renovation of the National Theatre of Ghana.
According to the Minister, the funding represents a major milestone in efforts to restore and modernise one of Ghana’s most important cultural landmarks.
The planned renovation is expected to address longstanding structural and technical challenges at the National Theatre, while upgrading its facilities to meet contemporary standards for performances, exhibitions, and cultural programming.
Gomashie noted that the intervention underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening Ghana’s creative and cultural sector, providing artists, performers, and cultural institutions with improved infrastructure to support their work.
The renovation of the National Theatre will not only preserve Ghana’s cultural heritage but also enhance the country’s appeal as a destination for cultural tourism, creating opportunities for job creation and increased economic activity within the creative arts ecosystem.
The National Theatre has long served as a hub for theatre, dance, music, and other creative expressions. The planned $30 million renovation is therefore seen as a critical step toward revitalizing the space and reaffirming its role at the heart of Ghana’s cultural life.
