There will be no run-off on Saturday, September 2, 2023, the Special Elections Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced.
The latest development was communicated in a statement signed by the Chairman of the Committee, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye.
The committee cited Boakye Agyarko’s decision to withdraw from the contest as the primary reason for canceling the run-off election, originally scheduled for Saturday.
Boakye Agyarko, a flagbearer hopeful, came in fifth place with Francis Addai-Nimoh, at the just-ended NPP super delegates conference.
Mr Agyarko expressed his deep concerns regarding the legitimacy of the run-off process.
“I refuse to be a part of such an act that seeks to unjustly truncate a previously agreed-upon process and cannot be part of what is about to be done on Saturday, 2nd September 2023. I cannot, with a clear conscience, make such an impermissible concession to such an errant decision.
“I, therefore, respectfully serve this notice to refrain from such a contest. As always, I wish the party well,” he said.
With Agyarko’s withdrawal, the aspirants who will now compete in the NPP presidential race are Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Trade and Industry Minister Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, former Agriculture Minister Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Francis Addai-Nimoh.
The committee emphasized its unwavering commitment to transparency and fairness throughout the election process, striving to uphold the principles of democracy within the party.
The main election has been scheduled for November 4, 2023.
