Gov’t allocates GHc233m for construction of water treatment plant in Tamale

As part of efforts to provide potable water for residents in the Northern Region, government has allocated GHc233 million for the construction of a water treatment plant in Tamale.

Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah who disclosed this at a press briefing indicated that Cabinet has already approved the amount awaiting parliamentary approval for the commencement of the project.

He said the project is expected to be ready in 3 years and will help curb the rampant water shortages facing thousands of people in the region.

“This new project is aimed at addressing the supply of water from Tamale and its surrounding communities as well as achieving the Ghana government target of water for all by the year 2030.”

“It expands Tamale metropolis, Yapei and Damango as well. The scope of works for the project covers the construction of a new water treatment plant with pumps and transmission pipelines, pumping stations, new district offices at Tamale and the installation of dedicated power lines to serve this new facility. The project is financed by an export credit facility from a number of institutions led by the Deutsche Bank,” the Information Minister added.

The GWCL in the Northern Region recently attributed the water shortage in Tamale to the recent power outages.

Communications Officer of GWCL in the Northern Region, Nii Abbey, earlier said the situation was affecting production hours hence their inability to supply water.

Some residents had also complained about the discomfort the situation was having on their lives.

Mr Abbey also indicated that the pollution of water bodies through the activities of sand winning is also a contributory factor to the shortage.
