42-year farmer killed by elephants leaves behind three wives, 13 children
A 42-year-old farmer, Fuseini Mbieni, who has three wives and 13 children, has been killed by three wandering elephants on his farm in Nambotre near Gbintiri in the Gambaga District of the North East Region.
The police in the region have confirmed the incident, which occurred on Wednesday, August 25.
The rampaging elephants also injured another person who managed to escape.
The body of the deceased has been conveyed to Gbentiri for burial.
The mammals also invaded neighbouring communities Soanvusi, Nasuan and Tuna.
Officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) reported that the elephants were moving across the street when two persons on a motorbike ran into them.
The animals attacked them, leading to the death of Fuseini Mbieni.
One of the elephants has been confirmed dead, while two are reportedly injured after some community members shot them.
The assembly member of the Gbintiri Electoral area and one Beladat Mbiane reported the incident to the Gbintiri police, and investigation has commenced.
Police personnel from the Gambaga District have been sent to Gbintiri to investigate the case.
Arrangement is also being made to convey a medical officer from the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu to the scene to assist the police investigations.
The two elephants, who reportedly moved further to the Kariga District, have returned to the East Mamprusi Municipality.
Elephant killed in Walewale
In May this year, an elephant was shot dead by unknown persons at Walewale, also in the North East Region.
The mammal was said to have strayed from the Mole National Park in search of water following the long drought experienced in the area.
Wildlife officials subsequently complained to the police in Walewale to investigate the killing of the elephant.
