CID investigates 53 schools over school feeding corruption

The Ghana Police Service has begun investigations into alleged corruption in the implementation of the School Feeding Programme in some Senior High Schools (SHSs).

So far, 53 schools in the Ashanti Region have been cited, with some alleged to have exchanged food for cash.

This was contained in a letter from the Ghana Education Service, notifying its Ashanti Region directorate of the said infractions committed in the said schools.

“It will be appreciated if your office could cooperate and collaborate fully with the CID in carrying out the investigations,” the GES said in a letter addressed to its  Ashanti Regional Director.

The letter was signed by Deputy Director-General of the GES, Anthony Boateng and dated April 28.

District directors of education have also been asked to release headmasters, headmistresses, assistant heads, domestic bursars, accountants and storekeepers who would be invited for the investigations.

The Ghana School Feeding Program (GSFP) which started in 2005 is an initiative of the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Program (CAADP) Pillar 3 which seeks to enhance food security and reduce hunger in line with the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on hunger, poverty and malnutrition.

The basic concept of the programme is to provide children in public primary schools with one hot nutritious meal, prepared from locally grown foodstuffs, on every school-going day.

The aim is to spend 80% of the feeding cost in the local economy.
