Self-defense doesn’t always require fancy equipment or martial arts training—sometimes, the tools you need are already in your purse, pocket, or even lying around your home. Everyday items like keys, pens, and screwdrivers can become practical tools when used strategically.
While self-defense classes and techniques are invaluable, knowing how to use everyday items around you is important to protect yourself in a dangerous situation. These tools are often within arm’s reach and can be the difference between being vulnerable and staying safe. Remember, the goal is to escape—not to fight.
Here are eight self-defense techniques using everyday objects that could make all the difference:
1. Keys
Your keys are one of the most accessible self-defense tools. Hold them in your fist, with the key sticking out from the bottom of your hand—not between your knuckles. 2. A Pen or Pencil
Pens and pencils can be used in self-defense if appropriately held. Grasp the pen firmly in your fist, leaving the pointed end sticking out from the bottom of your hand. Use it to jab vulnerable areas like the attacker’s eyes, neck, or hands. The sturdy grip ensures you maintain control and maximize impact.
3. Screwdriver
