A 30-year-old man has been sentenced to 25 years imprisonment with hard labour by the Bekwai Circuit Court for his involvement in a robbery that occurred in 2022 at a mining site located in Manso Akwasiso within the Ashanti South Region.
The convict, Dominic Ofori, also referred to as Fanta, was apprehended on February 16, 2026, after evading capture for several years.
He entered a guilty plea before the Bekwai Circuit Court for robbery, in violation of Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), and was subsequently sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment.
On March 20, 2022, the Manso Adubia District Police received intelligence indicating that a group of armed individuals from Manso Abodom were planning to assault a mining site at Manso Akwasiso to steal gold concentrate from the owner.
In response to this information, the police conducted a coordinated operation and set up an ambush at the location.
At approximately 5:30 pm that same day, four armed men arrived at the site, opened fire indiscriminately, and robbed the miners of their gold concentrate. The police team monitoring the situation intervened, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
Three of the suspects, Abu Abubakar, Musah Latif, and Gideon Takyi, suffered gunshot wounds and were declared dead upon arrival at St. Martin’s Catholic Hospital in Agroyesum.
Dominic Ofori managed to flee at that time but was later apprehended and brought before the court.
The Ashanti South Regional Police Command reassures the public of its ongoing dedication to fighting violent crimes and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice.
