Twenty-two out of 50 fishermen who were left stranded at sea following a violent assault by heavily armed individuals have been successfully returned to shore, while efforts persist to rescue others still awaiting assistance offshore.
The fishermen were rescued from two distinct boats after their colleagues towed them back to land. It is reported that their outboard motors were taken during the attack, rendering them immobile.
Footage from the landing area depicted scenes of relief and celebration as the rescued individuals arrived. Family members, friends, and community members cheered and hurried to greet them. They poured white powder over the fishermen in a traditional expression of joy and gratitude.
Armed persons assaulted the fishermen at sea near Senya Beraku in the Awutu Senya District of the Central Region, discharging multiple warning shots, holding victims at gunpoint, and absconding with seven outboard motors, generators, and other valuables on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.
The incident transpired during a night fishing expedition, leaving over 50 fishermen stranded offshore after their equipment was confiscated.
The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh, stated that four canoes had been dispatched to aid the affected fishermen.
In a coordinated response, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) also deployed a rescue team comprising navy and air force personnel to assist the victims.
