The Ghana Police Service has arrested 17 suspects after a series of swoops in known ‘wee’ ghettos in Kumasi to crack down on drug peddling,

Four teenagers are part of the suspected ‘wee’ users and peddlers who are in police custody.

The early Sunday morning operations targeted areas such as Alabar, Kronom, Krofrom, and Tafo, resulting in the arrest of 17 suspected ‘wee’ users and peddlers.

The arrested teenage suspects are Abdulai Moro (16), Mohammed Sadique (16), Kelvin Oppong (18), and Joseph Obeng (18).

The other suspects are: Abdul Samed (23), Farouk Iddris (22), Issah Mohammed (35), Abubakar Umar (33), Haruna Yusif (22), Hafius Musah (20), Samuji Ishmaily (24), Amina Amadu (24), Yusif Mohammed (30), Noble Kwarteng (21), Martin Ampomah (21), Kwame Oduro (22), and Simon Obimpeh (23).

During the operations, police seized paper wraps of powdery substances and dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs.

All suspects are in police custody, with exhibits retained for evidential purposes.

This crackdown comes amidst concerns about the growing issue of substance abuse among young people in Ghana. Just recently, two teenagers were arrested with 30 parcels of suspected ‘wee’.

The police efforts aim to curb the illicit drug trade and ensure public safety.
