One of the largest earth activities in Ghana surprisingly attracts no corresponding noise. The start of work is relatively unknown to many after the initial rhetoric was dismissed as hot air. Now, the actions have no ambiance.
There were numerous calls from the public to get it done, but once it got started, little was said about it. It is however unknown whether people are aware of it and are satisfied with the operations, hence their silence about this project.
Earthmoving machines are crisscrossing the wide space this activity is being undertaken but it looks like this has not struck anybody. When completed, the long overdue project would be one of the greatest achievements of any government since Ghana gained political independence in 1957.
The forest-fringed road joining Accra and Kumasi is the one that passes through towns like Nsawam, Anyinam, and Konongo. It is to be reshaped into a dual carriageway where the opposite directions have little or no proximity. The narrow nature of the existing road is penciled to be a leading cause of motor crashes – head-on collisions.
The silent path that is incubating is a replica of China’s as vehicles in opposite routes won’t meet at all. The new diversions avoid demolitions of residential settlements and sacrilege of cemeteries dotting the road, thus less hassling over compensations on relocations may occur. A major work with little acoustics is unusual in Ghana where competing forces easily tout their achievements.
