Klottey Korle MP Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has donated some relief items to residents affected by the ongoing Akosombo Dam spillage.
She recently embarked on a visit to numerous flood-affected areas, including Sogakope, Vume, Sokpoe, Dabala, and other communities in the South Tongu District.
These communities have been grappling with significant hardships due to the rising waters in the Volta River, triggered by the controlled spillage from the Akosombo Dam.
The relief items include blankets, clothing, food, clean drinking water, and hygiene products, all aimed at providing essential support to those who have been displaced by the floods.
Additionally, she ensured that crucial medical supplies were readily available to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services in the region.
During the distribution of relief items, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings expressed her heartfelt concern and sympathy for the affected residents, stating, “It is truly heart-wrenching to witness the suffering of our people in the wake of this devastating flood. As their representative, I believe it is my duty to offer assistance during these trying times.”
The legislator also emphasized the importance of a collaborative effort to address the aftermath of the floods, saying, “We are working closely with local authorities and organizations to provide immediate relief and to formulate long-term strategies for mitigating the impact of such disasters in the future.”
The flood-affected communities expressed deep gratitude to Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings for her timely intervention.
The controlled spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams, initiated on September 15, 2023, became necessary due to heavy rainfall in the Volta River catchment, causing a rapid rise in the water level in the Akosombo Dam.
This measure was taken to prevent overtopping and to protect the dam’s integrity.
As of early October, the water level continued to rise rapidly, surpassing the maximum operating level of 276 feet.
Consequently, the VRA increased the spill rate from October 9, 2023, flooding several communities in the North, South, and Central Tongu District and the Ada East District.
Throughout this period, high-level members of the VRA and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) have been present in the affected areas, assessing the impact of the spill and providing relief items alongside educational outreach on safety in the communities.
The VRA and NADMO have been evacuating affected individuals to safe havens on higher ground, ensuring their safety during these challenging times.
