Zamalek has emerged as the champions of African club football’s secondary competition after a thrilling 1-0 victory over RS Berkane in the second leg of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup final.
This secured them the trophy on aggregate on Sunday.
Heading into the return fixture at the Cairo International Stadium, the Egyptian giants were trailing 2-1 from the first leg in Morocco a week ago. However, with the support of a lively home crowd, draped in Zamalek’s traditional white and red, they produced a remarkable comeback to claim the title for the second time.
Striker Ahmed Hamdi was the match-winner, putting Zamalek ahead on 23 minutes to level the tie on aggregate.
Unfortunately, the joy was short-lived as Hamdi had to be substituted due to injury just before half-time.
The second half saw Zamalek defending resolutely as Berkane relentlessly attacked in search of an away goal.
Senegalese midfielder Ibrahima Ndiaye was outstanding as Zamalek displayed resilience and organization to repel their opponents’ threat.
Berkane’s frustrations boiled over late in the game as Hamza El Moussaoui received a red card, leaving them with 10 men.
Despite the pressure, Zamalek’s defense held firm to secure a 2-1 aggregate victory and ignite scenes of jubilation.
This victory marks a remarkable turnaround for the Cairo-based club, adding to their title in the 2018/19 season and securing their second title in the competition.
Meanwhile, for Berkane, their dream of a third TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup triumph in four years slipped agonizingly through their grasp after coming so close to glory on the road.
