‘Your hypocrisy is glaring, you’ve no moral right to write to the president’ – Sekou Nkrumah to Totobi Quakyi

Dr Sekou Nkrumah, the youngest son of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, has said Mr Totobi Quakyi lacks the moral right to write to President Nana Akufo-Addo to condemn the violence that marred the Ayawaso West Wuogon by election on Thursday, 31 January 2019 because similar violence occurred under the then National Democratic Congress (NDC) government in the 1990’s when Mr Quakyi was the Minister of National Security.

Mr Quakyi in an open letter to Nana Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, 5 February 2019 described the scenes at the residence of the NDC candidate at La-Bawaleshie where some national security operatives shot and wounded six NDC supporters as “utterly disgraceful and well-deserving of the condemnation of all true patriots of this nation.”

“More importantly, those events were but another expression of pervasive lawlessness, impunity and disregard for due process that our democracy certainly cannot survive if left unchecked. Nothing less than the very stability of this nation is at stake, for the next step from this point takes us over the edge and into the abyss,” Mr Quakyi added.

In a swift response, Mr Nkrumah said Mr Quakyi is a hypocrite as similar violence was meted out to innocent Ghanaians under the watch of Mr Quakyi in the 90’s.

Mr Nkrumah posted the following on Facebook:

“Not so fast Totobi Quakyi!

“Some of us are old enough to remember what your NDC government in the 1990s did to peaceful demonstrators!

“On several occasions your government through the security forces brutalized innocent Ghanaians who were just protesting bad government policies!

“Also the so called para military groups beat up and even killed some demonstrators, so please let’s not go there!

“Your hypocrisy is too glaring and you have no moral right to write any letter to the President”
