“Your departure has left an unbridgeable void in my life” – Kufour’s tribute to his wife
Former President John Agyekum Kufour penned a heartfelt tribute to his late wife, Theresa Aba Kufour, as she journeys home.
In the tribute read at the state burial for the former First Lady, at the forecourt of the State House on Thursday, November 16, 2023, the Former President described his “beloved Aba” as an angel who was soft-spoken and well-mannered.
“My first impressions of my beautiful Aba were that of a soft-spoken and well-mannered lady; and within a year of bonding and courting, we both discovered that we very much enjoyed each other’s company,” he recounted.
He cited her silent but formidable contribution to his tenure as the president of Ghana.
“When I was elected to office as the second President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana, Aba would play a pivotal but quiet role in shaping key social interventions, such as the kindergarten stage for all the children of Ghana in the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education policy; the provision of one hot meal a day to primary school children across the nation; the launch of the National Health Insurance Scheme; and the introduction of free maternal care for all.
“Aba, your departure has left an unbridgeable void in my life; but I take solace from the many mercies and blessings the good Lord has showered on our journey of 62 years: living long; the blessing of beautiful children; 14 splendid grandchildren; the honour of having served our nation together; the gift of loving; extended families; and a network of friends around the world.”
Mrs Kufour died at her home in Peduase on Sunday, October 1, at 87.
The final funeral rite will be performed for the former First Lady at Heroes Park in Kumasi on Saturday, November 18.
She will be given a private burial.
Thanksgiving service will be held on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at St. Peter’s Basilica, Kumasi, at 10:00 a.m.
Mrs Theresa Aba Kufuor is survived by her husband, H.E John Agyekum Kufuor (Former President of the Republic of Ghana), and five children: J. Addo Kufuor, Nana Ama Gyamfi, Saah Kufuor, Agyekum Kufuor, and Owusu Afriyie Kufuor.
