You should be mentally examined – Court refers mom who ‘killed’ two kids for medical examination

An Accra Circuit court has ordered for the medical examination of 28-year-old mother who poisoned her twin sons.

The court presided over by Her Worship Mrs. Akosua Anokyewaa Agyapong, recommended for the examination before proceeding with the hearing process.

This follows indications by relatives of the suspect that she is mentally not stable.

The suspect, Abigail Agbugla, was arrested by the Tema Regional police command for allegedly feeding her 8-months-old twin sons with rat poison over claims that their father was not being responsible.

The incident occurred on Thursday, July 30, and residents who heard about the incident trooped to the scene.

In a viral video, some women were heard in the Ga language condemning the mother over what they described as wicked murder.

One angry neighbour accused the suspect of being lazy over complaints that the father of the children only provided GHC 20 weekly for the upkeep of the children.

The woman suggested that the suspect could have sold sachet water or found a job “rather than killing your child”.

The woman who was heard in the video, which did not capture her face, said she has four fatherless children, but she hustles to take care of them by herself.

Acting Head of the Police Public Affairs Unit at Tema, Chief Inspector Dede Dzakpasu, explained that the Tema Regional CID had information about the deaths at about 5:30 pm on Thursday.

The crime scene team and investigators visited the scene where they found the motionless bodies in a wooden structure.

Upon inspection, no marks of assault were found on the bodies.

However, their mouths and nostrils were foamy.

Police retrieved a bottle containing some liquid which will be sent to the police forensic laboratory for examination.

The mother of the children was arrested and detained to assist with the investigation.

The bodies of the children were conveyed to the Police Hospital where they were confirmed dead by a medical officer and later deposited in the hospital morgue for autopsy.
