You can’t upgrade a broken system — Sammy Gyamfi jabs NPP

The national communications officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has criticised the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for plunging Ghana into bankruptcy and chaos.

According to him, Ghana is in a total mess, with unsustainable debt, soaring unemployment, and a depreciating cedi.

Mr Gyamfi stated, “Ghana has defaulted on its debt obligations for the first time in 50 years, our debt is unsustainable, and unemployment has almost doubled from 8.4% to 15%.”

He also highlighted the cedi’s drastic depreciation saying, “It has depreciated by over 20% in 2023, and today you need more than 16 cedis to get a dollar.”

The NDC spokesperson emphasized that state institutions are on the verge of collapse, with corruption being the only thriving aspect.

He stressed, “What we need now is a fundamental change in the direction of this country, a fundamental change in the management of this country, that is what we call a reset.”

Mr Gyamfi rejected the idea of upgrading the current system, saying, “You don’t upgrade a broken system, you don’t upgrade a system that doesn’t work. What you do is you reset it, you fundamentally change and you begin the process of rebuilding it.”

Additionally, Mr Gyamfi, stated that a nation that cannot take care of its sick population is in a state of illness.

He explained that the NDC plans to eliminate fees for students with disabilities from levels 100 to 400, meaning that no physically challenged will pay fees under a future NDC Mahama government.

Mr Gyamfi highlighted the “Mahama Cares” initiative, which will support individuals with chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and kidney failure, who currently struggle to afford costly medications.

He emphasized that chronic diseases account for the highest percentage of mortality in the country and that many of these deaths are not covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The NDC’s call for fundamental change comes as Ghana faces economic and social challenges, with the party promising a new direction and management to rebuild the nation.
