Former President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama has tasked the South African government to take responsibility of inhumane actions meted out to foreign nationals resident in the country in the wake of recent xenophobic attacks there.

The former President of Ghana wants the South African government to put in place stringent measures to prevent these attacks from recurring in future.

According to the former President, the actions of the South Africans are condemnable and run absolutely contrary to efforts at continental integration.

The former President in a social media post said the xenophobic attacks go contrary to the continental solidarity that was required to defeat apartheid.

He noted “The whole of this continent, the whole of Africa stood behind South Africa to fight against apartheid. I remember all of us growing up as secondary school children went on Marches, we were part on the African Youth Command, we demonstrated, boycotted classes all in the fight against apartheid. ”

He added “Indeed for several of these countries where their citizens have been brutalized in South Africa, these were countries that were called front-line states that harbored the freedom Fighters of South Africa”.

The former President is calling on all stakeholders to ensure peace is restored and Africa continues to be the safe haven it is known for.
