2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah set for comeback against South Africa

Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah is set for a return to the Black Stars starting line-up on Monday, 6 September 2021, after a long absence from the squad.

The experienced Ghana defender steps in as a replacement for Daniel Amartey is among the seven players who features last Friday against Ethiopia but could not travel with the team to South Africa amidst Covid-19 restrictions.

The Columbus Crew captain is expected to partner France-based center back Alexander Djiku at the center of Ghana’s defense when the team face South Africa in their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Monday afternoon.

Mensah is one of the in-form Ghana centre backs enjoying a good start at club level having scored 2 goals already as the Crew look to defend their MLS title won last season.

CK Akonnor’s team will play South Africa on matchday two of the campaign in Johannesburg on Monday in their attempt to qualify for their fourth World Cup appearance.

After missing the 2018 event in Russia, Ghana has set their sights on returning to the global tournament which is expected to take place in the Asian country of Qatar next year.

The Black Stars are top of Group G in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers having started with a win against Ethiopia on Friday and will hope to keep their 100% record intact when they visit Johannesburg and play the Bafana Bafana.
