World Cup 2022: FIFA set to investigate elbowing of FIFA official by Uruguay’s José María Giménez
FIFA will initiate a disciplinary procedure to investigate the incident and determine whether or not José Maria Giménez will face punishment.
According to many videos on the field of the moment shared on social media, José Mara Giménez lifted his elbow and assaulted a FIFA official on the field of play while protesting to referee Daniel Siebert near the changing room tunnel, at the end of the match of the last day of group H against Ghana.
Giménez can be seen approaching the German in the aforementioned videos amid the commotion that his teammates had already created around the referee. As he gets close to the man wearing the FIFA suit, he raises his elbow and strikes him in the back of the head before continuing on his way to the referee to protest the two penalties shouts during the encounter with the Black Stars.
Uruguay beat Ghana 2-0 but exited the tournament with the Black Stars after South Korea beat Portugal 2-1. A number of players, notably Edinson Cavani and Diego Godin, went to the referee to voice their objections as soon as the game was declared over. Giménez follows suit, catching up to them at full speed as he makes his way to the referee.
