Wontumi to appear in Accra on Monday or risk arrest
Attorney-General Dr Dominic Ayine has issued a clear directive to Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, to report to Accra on Monday, October 6, 2025, or face arrest.
Charges against the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman and his company, Akonta Mining, have been finalised and signed.
Dr Ayine announced during President John Mahama’s meeting with civil society groups on illegal mining in Accra.
“The charges against Wontumi, Akonta Mining, have been signed. He should be here on Monday. If he doesn’t come by Monday, I will order his arrest, and his charges will be read to him,” he stated.
The case stems from ongoing investigations into Akonta Mining’s operations. CID boss DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor confirmed that inquiries are still active.
She noted that Wontumi had met investigators several times but had recently postponed further meetings due to illness, a claim backed by his legal team.
Another individual linked to the company, identified as Akuoko, has also been arrested and questioned. Wontumi first appeared before the CID in May, accompanied by former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame and ex-MP Andy Appiah-Kubi.
Despite the mounting scrutiny, Wontumi maintains his innocence.
On Wontumi TV, he said, “I want to tell the public that I am not into galamsey. I have a large-scale company, which Akonta Mining is under… All the required documents I have, I will make all available”.
He added that he is ready to cooperate fully and hopes the law will take its course.
