Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service in Accra on Monday, May 26, 2025.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was accompanied by his lawyer, former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame, and former Asante-Akim North MP, Andy Appiah-Kubi.

His appearance at the CID follows a tense standoff last Friday, May 23, when a joint team of National Security and police officers attempted to arrest him at his residence.

Videos of the scene quickly circulated online, showing armed officers surrounding the property while supporters of Wontumi gathered, alleging political harassment.

The Ghana Police Service has not released official details about the nature of the inquiry.

However, sources familiar with the matter believe the questioning is related to an ongoing investigation into a loan Chairman Wontumi reportedly took from Exim Bank.

The incident has sparked significant public discussion, especially within political circles, with many calling for clarity from authorities.

Others see the situation as reflective of rising political tensions in the lead-up to the next election cycle.

A legal aide close to Wontumi said, “We are here to cooperate fully with the police and clear any doubts about the matter”.
