Woman arrested for abandoning baby in toilet pit

A 38-year old woman has been arrested by the Drobo Police in the Bono Region for allegedly abandoning her day-old baby boy at a public toilet building.

The married woman, Akua Serwaa, told the police the baby was born out of an illicit affair.

She said her husband has been away in Dubai and throwing away the baby was to avoid the shame of her unfaithfulness.

The Divisional Crime Officer in Berekuso, Franklyn Yevugah, in an interview with Asaase News, monitored by the ghanareport, stated that the baby was heard crying in a toilet pit by some people who were attending to the public toilet.

According to him, the assemblyman and other young men in the community broke the pit to rescue the baby who was sent to the Baano Number One clinic for treatment.

”Two days ago, according to the assemblyman, they had information that some people were attending to the public toilet when they heard a baby crying”, he said.

“the assemblyman and other young men in the community assisted in breaking the pit to rescue a day baby and took him to the Baano number one clinic”, he added

Meanwhile, the suspect who admitted to committing the act when she was questioned by the chief of the town has been remanded to police custody awaiting to reappear to court on 27th.

The baby has been transferred to the Berekum hospital for further treatment.

An investigation is still ongoing as the father of the baby is not yet known.

Last month, two babies were found abandoned in public toilets in the Ashanti and Savannah Regions.

A new baby girl on Friday, July 10 was wrapped and dumped in a bin in a public lavatory in Bremang in the Ashanti Region shortly after she was delivered.

Another newborn baby who was also dumped into a public toilet at Mempeasem in Bole in the Savannah Region on July 21. The newly born baby was wrapped in a polythene bag and disposed into a manhole in the public toilet.

Similar to this incidence was the arrest of a 35-year-old woman, Eunice Brobbey, who abandoned her newborn baby on a refuse dump in Bediako, a town in the Bono Region.

The Paga District Police Command mounted a search for a mother who abandoned her newborn baby girl in the maternity ward of the Paga District Hospital.

The woman, identified as 29-year old Christiana Akamlu, according to hospital authorities, reported to the facility on April 7 in her second stage of labour and was admitted and safely delivered a baby girl at about 3 pm same day.

The Police at Sibi in the Nkwanta-North District in the Volta Region went on a manhunt for a mother who dumped her newborn baby in a pit latrine shortly after delivery.

The runaway mother is said to have dropped the baby girl inside a 10-feet abandoned latrine at the Sibi Central Basic School to kill it.
