Woman, 58, arrested for using rotten ingredients to prepare food for sale
The Koforidua Central Police have arrested a 58-year-old woman for using unwholesome ingredients to prepare black pepper sauce, known as ‘shito’ for public consumption.
The suspect, Elisabeth Arthur (Naana), is a popular fish seller, and she uses the ‘shito’ prepared from rotten ingredients to complement her fried fish business.
According to the mill owner that grinds the ingredients, he discovered that Naana always brought maggot-infested tomatoes, pepper and onions, which raised concerns.
One day, he decided to follow madam Elizabeth only to realise she gathered her ‘shito’ ingredients from materials disposed of by kebab sellers, local food joints, and market operators.
She then goes to the mill, prepares her ‘shito’, and finally sends her grandchildren to sell the fish and ‘shito’ near the town’s favourite kenkey joint, where she is said to get most customers to patronise her food.
Consequently, the matter was reported to the Koforidua Central Police, who proceeded to pick her up.
According to sources, she is currently in police custody.
The police are collaborating with health authorities, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) and other regulatory bodies to prosecute the suspect.
