Wild Wild West in Ghana

Through Nsuaem, Dompim, Tarkwa, Aboso, Prestea, and Huni Valley, lush green suddenly gave way to barrenness, brown tones that jolted.

The sharp contrast pained my eyes so badly, searing my brain and all my senses. The rainforest was a promise long broken, abandoned with total wanton disregard.

Jaded in Wassa, Fiase, Nzema, Sefwi, and Aowin, nature screams from pits filled with oil-lined, turgid waters, fertile mud choking all signs of life.

Unnoticed by the young and old, seeking to eke out a day’s living, desperate to survive the cruelty of the mighty and powerful leading them to ruin.

In the wild, wild west, the disdain of the rulers and their connected allies for the future we seek meets the greater disdain of the impoverished.

For the misrule of the wicked. The voiceless, tearing up the forests, speak in unison – “They do not care about us.”

They do not seek violence, but now they revel in its fleeting promise of wealth.Through Nsuaem, Dompim, Tarkwa, Aboso, Prestea, and Huni Valley, jaded in Wassa, Fiase, Nzema, Sefwi, and Aowin, nature screams from pits.

In the wild, wild west, the disdain of the rulers and their connected allies for the future we seek echoes through the forests, as the voiceless cry – “They do not care about us.”
