Widow of late Ayawaso East MP declares intentions to contest NDC primary

Hajia Amina Adam, the widow of the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, has officially announced her intention to contest in the National Democratic Congress parliamentary primary scheduled for February 7, 2026.

This is part of the process to find another Member of Parliament for the constituency following the demise of the incumbent MP, Naser Toure Mahama, popularly known as McNaza, who passed away on January 4, 2026.

In a press statement that was signed and released on January 22, 2026, Hajia Amina Adam indicated that she decided to run for the party’s primary after engaging in discussions with community leaders, party members, and residents of the constituency.

She noted that this decision came after several weeks of contemplation following the death of her husband on January 4, 2026, describing this time as one of personal grief for both her and her children.

According to her, she received encouragement from various segments of the constituency, including elders, grassroots members, and youth groups, who urged her to step up and carry on the work of her late husband, who represented the constituency until his passing.

Hajia Amina Adam stated that she heeded the call after considering the advice of chiefs, imams, and other community leaders, as well as young individuals who motivated her to seek the seat under the NDC banner.

Another party member who has expressed a desire to contest the primary is Baba Jamal, who currently serves as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) has set March 3, 2026, for the main by-election.
