Why the rush – CHRAJ questions NIA, EC over registration amid COVID-19 outbreak

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), has waded into calls to have the National Identification Authority (NIA), and the Electoral Commission (EC) suspend their registration exercises.

The Commissioner of CHRAJ, Joseph Whittal, expressed disappointment in the actions of the two-state institutions have persistently said they would continue with registration exercise.

NIA has come under massive backlash after they defied the Presidential directive on a ban on public gatherings of more than 25 persons.

Despite the order, the NIA has been adamant, insisting; it had not violated President Akufo-Addo’s directive since they were adhering to the social distancing protocol.

However, speaking in an interview on Starr FM, monitored by the theghanareport.com, Mr. Whittal said the commission could consider legal action against the two institutions, but in the meantime appeal to the conscience of the NIA and EC to suspend the registration exercises until the COVID-19 cases in Ghana were contained.

“We’re talking about COVID-19 and we’re not in normal times. The President’s directive is just for four weeks, and so why can’t the NIA wait? Everybody is waiting, so why can’t the NIA also wait? We’re not saying don’t do it. You can wait till until the four weeks are over and then you continue the exercise. At least by then, we will know whether we have been able to contain the virus or not,” he said in the interview.

THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE FOOD OF MANY PASTORS HAVE BEEN TAKEN FROM THEIR TABLE, AND THIS IS SAD. MANY CHURCHES HAVE TAKEN LOANS FROM THE BANKS FOR THEIR BUILDING PROJECTS. HOW ARE THEY SUPPOSED TO REPAY THE LOANS IF THEY ARE NOT TO MEET? IS THERE NO BETTER DIRECTIVE FROM THE PRESIDENCY FOR CHURCHES?
