Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has described Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as a man of destiny.
Recounting his days as President of Ghana, former president Kufuor said he was impressed with Dr Bawumia’s presentation during a programme in London.
At the time, Dr Bawumia was a research assistant to the then Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Paul Kingsley Acquah.
“When he finished his address, I asked my officers to call him [Referring to Dr Bawumia] for me. Prophetically, I told him, carry on like that, and you will go far. Then, in 2008, as I was stepping down and the party had chosen then-candidate Akufo-Addo, who later became President, he also ended up choosing this same young man to be his running mate.
“There were surprises. People expressed misgivings about Akufo-Addo’s choice. I appealed to the party to let this young man continue—man of destiny. Today, we’ve all gathered here to launch him as our presidential candidate for the 2024 elections. This man is truly a man of vision and destiny,” he recounted prior to Dr Bawumia’s speech at the UPSA to outline his vision for Ghana.
According to the former President, Ghana’s current economic challenges require a leader who has command over new technologies and geopolitics.
“Ghana has come to the crossroads; it’s not the regular politics that we want. We want leadership with a vision even in the complex world. A leader that can marshal the new technologies to pick the requisite manpower. I am appealing to the nation to give him the chance. He is truly the man of the moment,” he said.
He urged party leaders to get people of competence to work with the NPP Flagbearer to achieve his vision for the country.
