The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) says it has settled on a new presidential candidate for the upcoming December 7 general elections.
This follows the death of the founder and presidential candidate, Akua Donkor.
Party officials say the new candidate will be unveiled to the public in the coming days, reaffirming the GFP’s commitment to the election and its vision for Ghana despite losing their founding leader.
Addressing journalists at a press conference in the Ashanti Region on Friday, November 1, the GFP parliamentary candidate for Nsawam-Adoagyiri said the party’s executive council had reached a consensus on both the presidential candidate and a running mate, selected to uphold GFP’s values and commitment to the Ghanaian people.
“The executives and leadership of the Ghana Freedom Party have decided and agreed on the next presidential candidate and running mate which will be announced and presented to the EC and the general public within the given period of the Electoral Commission to enable the Commission to proceed with its legal mandate and the democratic process of our country.”
In light of this development, the Electoral Commission (EC) suspended printing ballot papers for the 2024 presidential elections.
The EC has given the GFP 10 days to nominate a new presidential candidate.
Madam Akua Donkor’s death has prompted an outpouring of condolences across the political spectrum.
She reportedly died at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital) following respiratory complications.
Initially, she was taken to the Nsawam Government Hospital in the Eastern Region after complaining of breathing difficulties and later transferred to Accra.
However, she died a few hours later.
She is one of two female presidential candidates out of 13 for the 2024 elections.
She is known for hilarious comments about public matters.
