We won’t shield officers involved in electoral malpractice – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free and fair elections in the upcoming December 7 polls.

The Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of Corporate Services, Dr Bossman Asare emphasized this commitment during a press briefing on September 2, 2024.

Dr Asare made it clear that the EC will not tolerate any form of electoral malpractice by its officials.

“The commission will like to assure the public that it will not shield any of its officers both permanent and temporary found complicit in any electoral malpractices and would allow such persons to face the full rigorous of the law,” he noted.

The EC’s assurance comes in response to several concerns raised by political parties, particularly the National Democratic Congress (NDC), about the EC’s impartiality in organising the elections.

Despite these concerns, Dr Asare assured that the EC has Ghana’s best interests at heart and would in no way undermine the country’s peace before, during and after the election.

In a recent development demonstrating this commitment, the EC suspended its Pusiga District Director over allegations of unauthorised voter transfers.

According to the EC Deputy Chairman of Operations, Samuel Tettey, the director is the main suspect as no voter transfer in the district could be done without his involvement.

While speaking at a lecture in Tamale, he added that a committee has been set up to investigate the matter.

He said investigations so far have revealed that the illegal transfers were done using the photographs of the voter IDs of the affected persons.

“What the commission realized was that, instead of them going to the centre, they didn’t. Rather, the photographs were captured and that was what they used to affect the transfer.

“Someone collected those cards under the pretext of giving them loans. They managed to get the transfers done without going to the district office. So we have suspended the officer and we are investigating. Those who are involved will be sacked,” Mr Tettey said.
