We Will Work To Ensure Press Freedom In Ghana – GJA President

President of the Ghana Journalists Association(GJA), Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has expressed his commitment to ensuring that journalists operate without fear or interference from influential persons.

Mr Kwabena Dwumfour made this pledge during the Press Freedom Day celebration at the Press Centre in Accra on May 3, 2023.

According to him, the GJA is an umbrella for journalists and will continue to ensure that the rights of journalists are protected to operate freely in the country.

This year’s Press Freedom Day theme is ‘Freedom Of Expression: A Driver For All Other Human Rights For Ghana’s Development”.

The event, which brought together journalists, media students and key stakeholders in the media space, was to appreciate media personalities and to speak against the harsh treatment meted against journalists in their operations.

The World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders indicates that Ghana has dropped two spots from 60 in 2022 to 62 out of 180 countries.

Addressing the participants at the event,  the GJA president said the arrest and detention of Radio Ada’s Noah Dameh for seven days, the 14 days spent by Oheneba Boamah Bennie of Power FM and other cases contributed to Ghana dropping on the index.

Meanwhile, Mr Kwabena Dwumfour says he will make journalism attractive by ensuring good working conditions and better remuneration.
