We tried to get Cody Gakpo to play for Ghana a year ago – CK Akonnor

Former Black Stars head coach, CK Akonnor has disclosed that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) tried to convince Cody Gakpo to play for the Black Stars when he was in charge of the national team.

Unfortunately, he says the young forward decided to represent the Dutch national team at the senior level after going through the junior teams.

“Yes, we tried to get him to play for Ghana but he ended up rejecting us for the Netherlands. This was about a year ago when he was at the junior level,” Coach CK Akonnor said on Monday during the match between Senegal and Netherlands.

Cody Gakpo started for the Dutch today and starred with a good performance. He opened the scoring for the Netherlands in the 84th minute to inspire his country to cruise to a 2-0 win over Senegal.

He has in the past year become an important player for the Netherlands and will be expected to start again in the next Group A match against Ecuador.
