Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has appealed to party members to put Ghana’s national interest above internal differences as the party prepares to elect its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

In a New Year message to members of the governing party, Dr Bawumia said the NPP’s foremost goal must be victory in 2028, stressing that the task ahead is bigger than individual ambitions or internal competition.

According to him, the future of the country should remain the party’s guiding focus.

He urged party supporters to stay united and focused despite what he described as distractions, rumours, and perceived divisions within the party.

“To every NPP member listening to me, let us keep our eyes fixed on the prize. We must win 2028 for the sake of Ghana,” he said.

Dr Bawumia warned that allowing internal tensions to grow could weaken the party’s chances of returning to power, noting that disunity only benefits political opponents.

He therefore called on members to avoid actions and statements that could deepen divisions within the NPP.

He further stressed that the flagbearership contest should be based on ideas, vision, and policy direction rather than personal attacks.

According to him, negative campaigning within the party only hands an advantage to opponents ahead of the 2028 elections.

“We should not be distracted by the storms around us, the rumours, and the perceived divisions. Let us put aside anything that could further divide our party. This contest should be about ideas and vision, not personal attacks. When we engage in such actions, we only give ammunition to our opponents,” he added.

The NPP is expected to elect its flagbearer on January 31.

This process will formally kick-start the party’s preparations for the 2028 general elections, following recent constitutional reforms aimed at expanding participation in the selection process.
