The Vice-President of the Republic of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged the chiefs and people of the Wala Traditional Area in the Upper West Region to support security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators of the recent serial murders and unlawful acts in the region.

He disclosed this at the durbar to climax the Dumba Festival, which is celebrated every year and has a linkage to the birthday of the Holy Prophet Mohammed (S.A.W), which also commemorates the culture of the people in the Upper West Region of Ghana.

According to the Vice President, killing innocent people for no reason will not contribute to peace, leading to development in the area as investors are likely to refrain from establishing businesses there.

He encouraged the people to ensure peace and end chieftaincy disputes to spur development.

The theme for this year’s Dumba Festival was: “Combating the emerging threats of violent extremism and terrorism in Ghana: The role of traditional authorities”.

Dr Bawumia commended the chiefs for their active support to the security agencies in the area for ensuring that the perpetrators of serial killings are brought to book.

He added: “The government was concerned about the safety of all the citizens of the country, but indicated that peace and harmony could be achieved only if the people complemented the efforts of the security agencies to apprehend criminals and make them face the law”.

He described the theme for the festival as “appropriate since traditional authorities had a critical role to play in combating the threat of terrorism by ensuring vigilance and diligence in their respective communities.”

For his part,  Wa Naa Seidu  Pelpuo expressed gratitude to the government for assisting in combatting crime-related issues in the municipality.

Some of the activities during the festival included prayers, fasting and a procession on horseback amidst singing, drumming, and dancing.

The week-long celebration brought together personalities like the Wa Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, opinion leaders, politicians, diplomats, tourists, and others.
