The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced an increase in the number of centres in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Monday, September 18, 2023, the EC Chairperson, Madam Jean Mensa, said realising the exercise was highly participatory, they increased the number of registration stations in some places.

The EC earlier announced that the exercise would occur at the 268 district offices of the Commission for the exercise scheduled for Tuesday, September 12, to Monday, October 2, 2023.

This decision has been met with stiff opposition from some political parties led by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

However, updating the public on the exercise so far, Madam Mensa said they have increased the stations from two to three in some districts to reduce the long queues.

“To deal with the long queues in the Tamale Metropolis, we have increased their registration from two to four. And I’m happy to note that on Saturday, they recorded a high of 269 registrations and 410 on Sunday, September 17.”

She added that kits are being sent to the district offices to cater for the additional registration centres.

Meanwhile, she said long queues at registration centres during the early days are uncommon as many people rush to get registered.
