The Finance Minister-designate, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has outlined his strategy to boost revenue without increasing taxes, focusing on enhancing compliance within the tax system.

During his appearance before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 13, Dr. Forson expressed his commitment to working closely with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to improve tax collection processes and efficiency.

“We don’t need to raise taxes to generate more revenue,” Dr. Forson stated. “We already have the necessary tools, and I will collaborate with the GRA to improve compliance and ensure we collect the required revenue.”

He confidently projected that this approach would raise Ghana’s tax-to-GDP ratio, currently at 13%, to 16%, supporting the nation’s broader development objectives.

Dr. Forson also reiterated the government’s goal to reduce the tax burden on Ghanaians, pledging to review and eliminate unnecessary taxes where possible.

This, he explained, would provide relief to both citizens and businesses while promoting a fairer and more efficient tax system that drives economic growth.

As the future Finance Minister, Dr. Forson stressed the importance of balancing revenue mobilisation with creating an environment conducive to economic activity.

His proposed measures aim to address fiscal challenges while ensuring sustainable development without overburdening taxpayers.
