We are not pulling out of Akwatia by-election – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has confirmed its participation in the Akwatia by-election set for September 2, 2025, while accusing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of using the recent national tragedy to manipulate public sentiment for political gain.

The NDC’s response comes after the NPP announced it would not field a candidate in the upcoming Tamale Central by-election, following the death of the area’s MP, Alhaji Dr. Murtala Mohammed, in the August 6 military helicopter crash.

In a statement signed by Deputy National Communications Officer Godwin Ako Gunn, the NDC acknowledged the NPP’s decision not to contest Tamale Central, calling it “the best decision they have taken in recent times”.

However, the party questioned the motive behind the move, suggesting it was a strategic retreat designed to win public sympathy and deflect attention from what they anticipate could be a poor showing in Akwatia.

“This is not the first time a party has opted out of a by-election, the NDC declined to contest the Ejisu by-election following the death of John Kumah. We also wish to clarify that the Akwatia seat was the subject of a legal challenge, and no final ruling was made before the unfortunate passing of our brother, Ernest Kumi,” the statement noted.

The party also cautioned the public against taking the NPP’s declarations at face value, citing past inconsistencies.

“In the Ablekuma North rerun, the NPP announced they wouldn’t contest, yet were the first to hit the ground with campaign activity,” Ako Gunn recalled.

Extending condolences to the family of the late Ernest Kumi and to the families of the eight individuals who perished in the helicopter crash, the NDC expressed solidarity in mourning.

Mr Gunn also urged NDC members to show restraint and sensitivity during this period, advising all to be mindful of their public remarks in light of the national grief.
